It wasn't an away day to remember for Frank Lampard's young side

Head to Head Stats

• This was Chelsea's 58th game against Everton in the Premier League, having beaten them 24 times previously (41% win rate)

• The Blues £15m signing Ross Barkley was unfit to play against his former club (calf)
• Chelsea won the inaugural encounter 0-1 at Goodison Park back in November 1992
• Frank Lampard scored the winner as Chelsea beat Everton 2-1 in the 2009 FA Cup Final

The Build-Up

Everton manager Marco Silva was sacked just 24 hours before the Chelsea game, having been steamrollered 5-2 earlier in the week by Liverpool.

Duncan Ferguson was placed in temporary charge, amid rumours of a certain Carlo Ancelotti being installed as the next Toffees boss.

Chelsea had beaten Aston Villa in the Premier League three days earlier, but were in fixture congestion hell.

Three days after their trip to Everton, Chelsea had to win their final Champions League group game, at home to Lille, to progress in the competition.

The First Half

Everton started with trademark Duncan Ferguson intensity, getting the ball high up the pitch and at speed.

Richarlison knocked it out to Sidibé and with all Chelsea eyes on the ball, he ran into the box unmarked. The on-loan man from Monaco whipped it in and from six-yards out Richarlison headed beyond a static Kepa.

In reply, Willian deployed his trademark acceleration to muscle past Digne. His low cross was met by Abraham but the connection was poor.

A smart run from Azpilucueta sparked another Chelsea chance, finding Mason Mount on the left wing.

He fizzed the ball in but Abraham failed to make contact from four yards out.

The Second Half

Down by one at the break, Frank Lampard would've believed his men could find a way back into the game, but before long the Blues came up short again.

Pulisic had the ball taken off him by Sidibé who knocked it into the Chelsea box.

A poor clearance from Kurt Zouma saw the ball bounce off his chest and into the path of Calvert-Lewin, who slotted home.

2-0 Everton.
I think (Everton's formation) caught Frank by surprise. He could have switched to three at the back without making a substition - Glenn Hoddle
Unlike the first half, Chelsea found a way to respond.

Digne cleared the ball but only as far as Kovačić. Echoing his Champions League goal against Valencia earlier in the season, his first-time from 25 yards out evaded seven Everton players in the box and cruised into the net.

2-1 Everton.

In ding-dong games like this you'd expect Chelsea to claw their way to a draw. An important save from Kepa saw Walcott's effort denied, but it was merely a warning shot.

Kanté tangled with Tom Davies in the area. The loose ball was eventually poked home by Calvert-Lewin.

3-1 Everton.

The Aftermath

Everton held true to their word.

Two weeks later they hired former Chelsea's former manager, Carlo Ancelotti on a four and a half year deal.

The Italian, who was sacked by Chelsea after their 0-1 loss at Everton at the end of the 2010-2011 season, would galvanise the Toffees and make them genuine contenders in the race for European football.
I was sacked here by Chelsea in the corridor down there. I think you have to put a little plaque there now - Carlo Ancelotti
Chelsea went on beat Lille 2-1 in the Champions League and progressed to the last 16, with two games against 2012's beaten finalists, Bayern Munich added to the diary.

In their four remaining Premier League fixtures of the year, the Blues beat two London clubs in Tottenham and Arsenal, but lost to two South Coast teams in Bournemouth and Southampton.
